"In 2003, we started the wireless project "From Lena to the End of the World". We have just started running a relay infrastructure, consisting basically on small computers and antennas capable of connecting computers between each other by microwaves and therefore at along distance. We have installed 4 access points (AP) in strategic locations in Pola de Lena and one in Ronzon. Thus, we are creating an open, local, digital and high-speed network for data traffic, to exchange data, share access to Internet, a free digital radio, free local telephone, etc. Anybody with a computer and a wireless card can access the network as long as they get coverage from the wireless signal. We intend to create a new local association soon, to mange the network and facilitate access to interested people. The running of the network is done by the self-management of the partners, instead of just offering a free service. The project counts on the support from the Lena Council. We are preparing open talks and workshops so people can learn to mange their own access to the network. The network is based on free operating systems (linux) and free software. These kinds of networks will contribute to the rural development of small villages high-speed Internet cannot reach, or even telephone or mobile. Once the network from Pola to Ronzon works, we would also like to widen it in the valley to the south (Campomanes)."
